Grammy Predictions for 2012: Tony Bennett Could Challenge Adele

Look out, Adele: You have some new competition for the 2012 Grammy Awards, in the form of Tony Bennett.

Yes, while Adele's album '21' and single 'Rolling in the Deep' are still contenders to walk away with the major awards at the 2012 Grammy Awards, they're no longer the overwhelming favorites, because the legendary 85-year-old appears to have a great chance to dethrone her.

Our up-to-date prediction is based on Bennett's new duet with Amy Winehouse, 'Body and Soul,' the last song the troubled British singer ever recorded in her life. Released this week, just in time to be eligible for the 2012 awards, the song would be a huge sentimental favorite if it makes it into the Record of the Year category.

Bennett could also win Album of the Year if his 'Duets II' gets enough votes to make the final cut. He walked away with the award in 1995 when, as a young buck at 68 years old, he won for 'MTV Unplugged.'

The dates of eligibility for the 2012 Grammy Awards are October 1, 2010 – September 30, 2011. Any recordings released between these dates are contenders. That means that late 2010 releases, like Taylor Swift's 'Speak Now' and Kanye West's 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,' will feature prominently in next year's ceremony.

We think it's silly in this digital age to have such an early cutoff date. There is no reason the Grammys couldn't allow recordings through at least November to be eligible. Both rounds of the voting process could take place entirely online and nominees could be determined in a matter of a week or two.

The 2012 nominees won't be revealed until November, with the awards ceremony taking place in February.
