The 56th Grammy Awards will be aired live tonight, January 26, 2014, at 8pm (ET) on CBS.
The R&B categories are: Best R&B Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance, Best R&B Song, and Best R&B Album.
So, who are the nominees and what are my personal predictions/hopefuls:
BEST R&B PERFORMANCE:
"Love And War", Tamar Braxton
"Best Of Me", Anthony Hamilton
"Nakamarra", Hiatus Kaiyote Featuring Q-Tip
"How Many Drinks?", Miguel Featuring Kendrick Lamar
"Something", Snarky Puppy With Lalah Hathaway
PREDICTED WINNER: Though Tamar Braxton surprised us all and brought some solid songs and is doing extremely well with all her releases, since this based on performance, the hopeful winner is Anthony Hamilton. As we all know though, sometimes popularity wins over raw talent. So, though my preference is Anthony Hamilton, Tamar Braxton may just walk away a winner of this category. I wouldn't be mad if Kendrick Lamar and Miguel walked away with the prize either. Let's see. Tough category!
BEST TRADITIONAL R&B PERFORMANCE:
"Please Come Home", Gary Clark Jr.
"Get It Right", Fantasia
"Quiet Fire", Maysa
"Hey Laura", Gregory Porter
"Yesterday", Ryan Shaw
PREDICTED WINNER: "Get It Right", by Fantasia is the predicted winner. To me, Fantasia just has the best traditional feel of all the (unpopular) nominees. She is a natural talent whose story resonates with many.
BEST R&B SONG:
"Best Of Me", Anthony Hamilton & Jairus Mozee, songwriters (Anthony Hamilton);
"Love And War", Tamar Braxton, Darhyl Camper, Jr., LaShawn Daniels & Makeba Riddick, songwriters (Tamar Braxton);
"Only One", PJ Morton, songwriter (PJ Morton Featuring Stevie Wonder);
"Pusher Love Girl", James Fauntleroy, Jerome Harmon, Timothy Mosley & Justin Timberlake, songwriters (Justin Timberlake);
"Without Me", Fantasia Barrino, Missy Elliott, Al Sherrod Lambert, Harmony Samuels & Kyle Stewart, songwriters (Fantasia Featuring Kelly Rowland & Missy Elliott)
PREDICTED WINNER: Let's see, Fantasia or Tamar Braxton? Though Fantasia (teamed with Kelly Rowland and Missy Elliot) was a real good sound, it's really hard to call. Tamar Braxton brought some feelings with her song, "Love and War". This may just go to Tamar Braxton; he entire team is to be commended. I wouldn't be mad if Anthony Hamilton won, though not expected.
BEST R&B ALBUM:
"R&B Divas", Faith Evans
"Girl On Fire", Alicia Keys
"Love In The Future", John Legend
"Better", Chrisette Michele
"Three Kings", TGT
PREDICTED WINNER: This is a great category. Personally, it would be between John Legend and Alicia Keys. However, Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" was just too strong of an album/anthem to lose. TGT should claim an award soon, but not so sure about this year. We will see.
All nominees are wonderful and just being nominated for a Grammy is a true testimony of their talent.
Sure, a Grammy award does not optimally define an artist's true musical talent, but it is definitely one of the most noteworthy accolades.
