Grade my snow forecast: March 17 totals

See also

A day after St. Patrick’s Day brought a blanket of white over the green hopes of many, it has quickly melted. But what did pile up was pretty much on target, with the exception of an area between Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington DC that was above my range. My high end for BWI was 6 inches and they recorded 8.1 inches... so a little boost upwards. Determining what was on the grass vs the roads is another story.

The purpose of this post is accountability as I do with all winter storms. It is something I have done for many years, including busted events like our last one on March 3rd.

Note: Baltimore’s BWI has recorded 38.8” of snow this winter. That ranks this the 14th season on record since 1883. Seemed like higher, huh? Average is 20”.

The lessons learned were applied, and in all honestly one of my theories was proven. We had a full moon and this storm did over achieve. Then again, most of our storms this winter over achieved, and I was lucky to be a step ahead much of the time. This time there was one other key factor: The calendar date.

A March snowfall is tricky since a higher sun angle and recent temperatures the day before reached the mid 60s. That warmed the pavement and presented the issue of melting and wasted flakes.

In the slide show you can see my final call map I shared on my Facebook page, my first call snowfall map I shared in this column, and the county/regional breakdown of NWS snow spotter reports. The full list of snow reports from NWS Sterling VA can be found at the bottom of this post.

My Grade: A-

What went right:

· Most of this storm behaved as I presented, including the melting on the front end AND after sunrise, the falling temps, the ice underneath, and overall snowfall.

· My initial call of 4”+ worked out. My final 3”-6” range worked for most near and north of Baltimore.

· North Side: I expected the storm to bump north, and my call for 1-3” of snow in southern PA worked out well.

· South Side: I was uncertain of the temperatures an very high accumulation in southeast Virginia

· West/Mountains: My final push for 8”-12” played out well in the highest elevations of northern Virginia and West Virginia.

What went wrong:

· I was too conservative and should have expanded my highest snowfall region farther north. That included my 5”-8” zone northward into Howard County and near Baltimore.

· The highest snowfall did reach 9” in many parts of Anne Arundel, Calvert, and Howard County. Even higher amounts near Washington.

· The only other element that might be considered off was the arrival perhaps one hour earlier than my call. But since the roads were wet early, it was a wash. The sticakge on the roads did begin a little earlier as well, helping to build up the accumulation.

I called for a cold and snowy winter based on many reasons and now with over 30 inches in Baltimore, we are 50% above normal. It has been active ever since the record early start for the local ski resorts the day after Thanksgiving, helping to prove validation for my atmospheric memory theory. I wind more than I lose and I will certainly be out to do it again.
