David Tennant and Anna Gunn are coming to Fox in the fall in the new series "Gracepoint," a 10-episode mystery event series based on the U.K.'s "Broadchurch." On Monday, May 12, Fox released promotional photos and a first trailer teasing what to expect. The network is calling it "an expansion of the original series," and it will introduce new characters, new suspects and new storylines, and Fox Chairman Kevin Reilly has promised there will be a new ending and it will be just as good as "Broadchurch."
In case you never saw the U.K. series (and if you haven't, run, don't walk, and watch it now), the series begins with a young boy found dead on an idyllic beach, leading to a major police investigation in a small seaside town, in "Gracepoint's" case, in California. The case sparks a media frenzy, throwing the boy's family into further turmoil and changing the lives of all the residents of the town.
Tennant stars as Detective Emmett Carver, the lead on the investigation. He has just arrived in town to take a high position in the town's police force, a position that Detective Ellie Miller (Gunn) had expected to fill. Instead, she's right at the center of the tragedy, so she must put any resentment aside and work with her new boss. Her son, Tom (Jack Irvine) was the best friend of the victim, Danny (Nikolas Filipovic), whose parents Mark and Beth are played by Michael Peña and Virginia Kull.
The entire town is pulled into the investigation. Nick Nolte plays Jack Reinhold, a private man running the kayak rental service on the beach and the local wildlife observation program, for which Danny volunteered. Jacki Weaver plays Susan Wright, a mysterious woman living with her dog in the RV park near the coast. Kevin Rankin plays the minister Paul Coates, who becomes the community's spokesperson with the media coming to Gracepoint.
Sarah-Jane Potts plays Gemma Fisher, the hotel owner with secrets. Stephen Louis Grush is Vince Novik, Mark's apprentice at his plumbing company. Kevin Zegers plays the local newspaper reporter and Ellie's nephew Owen Burke, whose ambition is fueled by San Francisco Globe reporter Renee Clemons (Jessica Lucas). She has a history with Detective Carver, and she has come to Gracepoint to cover this case. If you've seen "Broadchurch," these characters should sound very familiar.
In fact, the first "Gracepoint" trailer will probably give you serious "Broadchurch" flashbacks as it introduces the case and the characters. Plus, check out the slideshow to see the photos Fox has released so far from its new mystery series. There are a couple of gallery images of Tennant and Gunn as Detectives Carver and Miller, as well as a few episodic photos showing them on the case, as well as Nolte's Jack and Kull's Beth and Peña's Mark.
"Gracepoint" premieres on Fox this fall, airing Thursdays at 9 p.m. following "Bones." Will you be watching?
