GPISD Multicultural Fair features human rights and diversity topics (Photos)

The Grand Prairie Independent School District presents a Multicultural Fair this week that features the award winning graphic novel "Echoes of the Lost Boys of Sudan," guest speakers who have experienced human rights violations, diversity education and In Full Color a Look at Black History Through Art traveling exhibit. The art exhibit features Professor William H. Foster III’s collection of historic black comic books. It also includes artwork from the Embrey Human Rights program at SMU. This event is free and open to the public.

The "Echoes of the Lost Boys of Sudan" created by James Disco and Susan Clark and illustrated by Niki Singleton, is a powerful graphic novel about survival during the genocide in Sudan. Dr. Rick Halperin, former chair of the Board of Amnesty International USA and professor of the Embrey Human Rights program at SMU, co-wrote the introduction. He connects what happened to the lost boys in the novel with the current tenuous situation in the Sudan and South Sudan regions. The book was made possible through funding by the National Junior Tennis and Learning Network co-founded by famed tennis player and human rights activist Arthur Ashe.

Guest speaker Given Kachepa will share his story about unwittingly becoming a modern day slave in America until his rescue. Jesse James Arnold, a well-respected historian in Dallas, will share his experience growing up in Texas during segregation. He will also describe Dallas during its slavery years.

There will be plenty of fun at the GPISD Multicultural Fair on Saturday. Student performances, booths, a student panel, multicultural crafts, a martial arts demonstration, tips for school success and a fashion show will round out a full schedule.
