Yesterday, January 19, 2012, Governor Tom Corbett encouraged residents to nominate Pennsylvania “citizen heroes” for a Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Foundation award to be presented in March.
The “Citizen Service Before Self Honors” program recognizes people who have demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice for others, whether it was risking one's life through a single act of extraordinary heroism or through a prolonged series of selfless acts.
Previous Pennsylvania honorees include Timothy Brooks of Philadelphia, for valiantly rescuing a woman and her three children who were stranded in the Delaware River after their tour boat collided with a barge and sank on July 7, 2010 and Dr. Pascal Spino of Greensburg, for a lifetime’s commitment to treating children, often not charging those who cannot afford healthcare and saving tens of thousands of lives.
Three individuals will be selected to receive the award at a March 23 ceremony in conjunction with the National Medal of Honor Day at Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. The commendable acts must have taken place within the past three years and nominees may include individuals who are deceased. The nomination deadline is Friday, February 10, 2012.
