If President Obama's goal during this shutdown is to come across as a bully and a tyrant, he's heading in that direction. The Weekly Standard's John McCormack visited the World War II Memorial again. Here's what he wrote:
On Tuesday morning, seven National Park Service employees were seen erecting and tending to a barricade around the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. One NPS employee was operating a forklift. There usually aren't any NPS employees working at the World War II memorial.
A couple hours later, when an Honor Flight of World War II veterans arrived, accompanied by Democratic and Republican members of Congress, the fences blocking the memorial were easily moved away, allowing the veterans to enter.
But the barriers are still at the memorial, and they've been reinforced. This morning, I walked by the memorial and noticed that wires had been used to tie the fences together.
President Obama is doing everything possible to inflict pain on the American people in his effort to force Republicans to cave to his demands. There's no question that those gates were installed and wired shut on his orders. Earlier this week, the administration found itself in the middle of a PR nightmare when a Park Service officer threatened to arrest World War II veterans if they tried entering the memorial built to honor their sacrifices and heroism.
The next day, the administration announced that World War II veterans being brought to the Memorial by Honor Flight would be allowed in. Apparently, the Obama administration decided to not keep that promise.
This is mean-spirited. This sentence says it all:
There usually aren't any NPS employees working at the World War II memorial.
That's because the World War II Memorial is an open-air memorial. It's situated right alongside a major sidewalk on the National Mall. It was built with private contributions, thanks to the hard work of Bob Dole, the former Senate Majority Leader and a former World War II veteran.
With each passing day, more pictures and videos show the Democrats, including President Obama, behaving boorishly. Between Harry Reid saying that wasn't interested in funding the National Institutes of Health to save children with cancer and President Obama barricading the World War II Memorial, the Democrats look mean-spirited and petty. That isn't how you win people's hearts and minds.
That's how PR nightmares are created.
