The Republican Party was determined to do whatever it takes to discredit President Obama, the first black president of America: Land of the Free, Home of the Brave.
In order to understand the Republican Party’s state of mind – let’s return to President Obama’s first term.
An article published by Glenn Kessler of The Fact Checker indicates it was Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader from Kentucky who said, “When I first came into office, ‘my number one priority is making sure president Obama’s a one-term president.’ Now, after the election, either he will have succeeded in that goal or he will have failed at that goal.”
This wasn’t just a statement; it was an evil underhanded strategy created by members of the Republican Party to overthrow our first African-American president’s leadership authority and stain future historical records concerning his presidency.
Marge Baker of Huffington Post states, “Republicans figured that if they refused to cooperate on anything, they could later tell voters that the president hadn't accomplished anything and that he had failed to reach across the aisle. McConnell and his caucus dove into that project hook, line and sinker, threatening to destroy the nation's economy by not raising the debt limit, blocking jobs legislation, eschewing compromise on the Bush tax cuts, refusing to staff the newly-created Consumer Financial Protection Bureau or the National Labor Relations Board, and blocking even uncontroversial federal judicial nominees.”
Although, Republicans failed in their collective goals to make President Obama a one-term president; you would think they would give-up their attempts to sabotage his presidency and work with him and lawmakers as they did with white presidents, not so. The Republicans goal is to ‘get our black president’ anyway they can – even if it means furloughing employees to ensure they suffer financial ruin (can’t pay bills or feed families); their bounty for this stupidity was the opportunity to revisit and dismantle the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) – a law enacted March 23, 2010 by a black president which affects them.
Guess what? Furlough actions that U.S. citizens are dealing with do not affect Republicans or Democrats. These lawmakers aren’t the ones experiencing sleepiness nights – they’re still getting paychecks and can pay their bills.
Why? Lawmakers are protected under The 27th Amendment which states, “No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened. (No law that would pay representative more or less in salary or other income will be allowed to take effect until after there has been another election).
The truth is: The furlough and holdup of the budget was used by the Republicans as a bargaining chip. Republicans basically informed democrats and the president – that the only way they’re past the budget to prevent furloughs would be to delay the activation of the Affordable Care Act. Why? For the first time in history – lawmakers are being treated (not quite) similar to other citizens based on closed door sessions.
For instance as reported by John Fund of National Review Online, “In 2009, Senator Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) decided that the principle deserved to be embedded in Obamacare, and he was able to insert a provision requiring all members of Congress and their staffs to get insurance through the Obamacare health exchanges. “The more that Congress experiences the laws it passes, the better,” said Grassley. Although his amendment was watered down before final passage to exclude committee staff, it still applies to members of Congress and their personal staffs. Most employment lawyers interpreted that to mean that the taxpayer-funded federal health-insurance subsidies dispensed to those on Congress’s payroll — which now range from $5,000 to $11,000 a year — would have to end.
Democratic and Republican staffers alike were furious, warning that Congress faced a “brain drain” if the provision stuck. Under behind-the-scenes pressure from members of Congress in both parties, President Obama used the quiet of the August recess to personally order the Office of Personnel Management, which supervises federal employment issues, to interpret the law so as to retain the generous congressional benefits.”
As a result, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) issued a final rule to amend the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program regulations regarding coverage for Members of Congress and congressional staff as follows:
The final rule includes the following modifications from OPM’s proposed rule (RIN3206-AM85):
• OPM has clarified that Members of Congress and designated congressional staff must enroll in an appropriate Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP), known as the DC Health Link Small Business Market as determined by the Director in order to receive a Government contribution.
• References to annuitants purchasing coverage on the Exchange have been deleted.
• OPM has provided a one month extension for staff designations for the 2014 plan year.
• Additional non-substantive edits have been made to improve clarity.
During the comment period for the proposed rule, OPM received nearly 60,000 comments from the public which were covered in the OPM Benefits Administration Letter.
As an American citizen, how sympathetic are you regarding lawmakers being forced into the same Obamacare health exchange as everyone else? Sure, they’ll pay a little more but we (citizens) will continue to cover the Government contribution portion of their healthcare plan. Further, some of these politicians earn a six to seven-figure salary and a few of them are millionaires.
American citizens and the rest of the world have heard about the Republican’s attitudes towards their first black president; as well as, Republicans desire to overthrow his presidency, create financial hardship for American citizens, block job legislation, destroy the nation’s economy by not raising the debt limit, and wiliness to throw a slowly recovering economy back into recession just to make a point.
Based on furloughs and conflicts involving the Republicans - do you seriously think, they actually care about this country and American citizens, or is it more about erasing the accomplishments of a two-term black American president? The president and democrats should not have to dismantle the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a law enacted three-years ago in order for Republicans to sign the budget, raise the debt limit and end the furlough.
Until Americans take a stand against Tea Party and racist Republicans - America will never be the Land of the Free, or Home of the Brave. Citizens of America - don’t let a few rotten-republicans determine your history/future. Instead let the world know, an American president does not have to be white in order to pass laws, make decisions or earn respect from Republicans and American citizens.
