The Mayor of D.C. was dismissed by Senator Reid…. Raise your hand if you want to be ignored, or told to “Shut Up”. The Government has PARTIALLY shut down? Seems that’s all people want to talk about, or NOT talk about. From all the angry voices, ugliness, and downright despicable tirades, surely the end must be near! The hurting pawns lost in the positioning and condemnation?
Are you as appalled and shocked by responses as I am? Can TRUTH be found anywhere? I’m ashamed viewing others’ threatening comments regarding House Speaker Boehner, or President Obama, or our political representatives! Is this just drama to play out, or can we raise the dialogue to reflect the authority we have placed in these men? People of faith equally rage with atheists, perhaps morality has taken a break too.
Simple PR campaigns and/or a Chess Match? Can you name the last successful PR stunt by either dominant party? I want to give more credit for principles, picturing school yard bullies facing off isn’t an option….
If your grandmother knew what you were saying, would she be pleased? Are we even LISTENING to each other anymore? Facebook has become an instrument to bludgeon political opponents with vulgar language and insults. The depth of hatred is endless. Disagreement doesn’t need to lead to all this muck throwing….
Where is our inspiration? Who will step up and be the hero? What will get the general public engaged? What gives the average American more true value, not just buy their vote? Are we better off on a soul level, when we spout defamation at another human? Is it just about getting our own way? Grow UP - A return to reason is in order!
People of faith need to rise above the viciousness, modeling LOVE! We are to “pray for our enemies” . Yet deeming either party as an enemy, is sooooo being part of the dilemma vs. help solve it… looking out for the American people’s best interest has to involve $$ & sacrifice. Be proactive, meeting the gaps of those in need… 1 on 1 is best.
No doubt, the shutdown is impacting Cincinnati, the TriState, and the region…. Individuals in my neighborhood and family; but, so is Obamacare. Dayton Air Museum is closed; VA, military orders & purchases are on hold; Wright Patterson Air Force Base appears a ½ empty shell; federal offices remain open with skeleton staffs; federal permits delayed at best; and employees of government contractors were immediately let go (23 victims testify to the course).
Many contractors have openly admitted to taking advantage of the shutdown (firing and renegotiating salary rates to a lower level; taking the time to retool, decreasing actual number of employees needed; extend contracts at the lowest rate; raise production rates….). Are they the bad guys? Or simply doing what it takes to survive?
The bain of contention: the Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare) has already taken a large toll on TriState employers (over 107 of the largest have weighed in on negative impacts, and their corresponding action… small business still are calculating). Despite the kindness of insuring all Americans, a business has to be profitable to survive!! When costs increase, businesses have 3 choices: Get creative, pass on the increase, or cut. They are doing all 3!
Plus… does anyone know of someone who has actually enrolled in 1 of the new networks? Wall Street Journal and others have named it “The Hunt for the Unicorn”. A # of single TriState parents, are NOT enrolling since it’s still TOO EXPENSIVE ( choosing to rely on the “Safety Net”??). Others are discouraged by the website (can’t seem to get things to work… look at the dozens of IT professionals, that are now calling this ½ billion software/website deplorable).
Argue if you must…… The facts dictate that the economy is still precarious at best. Healthy businesses are only adding employees, when beyond stressed on the income generation side of the equation. Support personnel are the last to be added, and only when absolutely necessary to prevent insanity.
Benefits, what are benefits? The very act designed to INCLUDE all is eliminating FULL TIME positions. It may seem cruel, yet if an employer reduces an employee to less than 30 hours to avoid a 23% increased cost---they have to do it!! Competing on an international basis, actions to streamline are necessary evils.
Then we go to those that want exceptions to Obamacare. Construction/Engineering are not the only strong unions asking to be EXEMPT from the new law. Change is tough, some don’t want to comply because it’s new and different. Yet, Unions are used to standing together, surely unions can be called upon to sacrifice for everyone to be covered? The predominant answer is NO! Can’t help ask Why?
Then the DOD uses “gray” legality to reinstate many of their employees under the shutdown. How many other departments will jump on this band wagon? What criteria will stand to determine who is non-essential? Exceptions will soon become the norm. Gee now even the terms of the shutdown are being debated…. Who gets to pick & choose?
In our elementary schools, we have three (3) main rules:
Stop, Look & Listen when a Teacher is Speaking.
Respect ourselves and others.
Respect the facility and the materials.
Think maybe we need to step back to grade school, and install some new policies with our leaders.
The first rule is designed for immediate safety and security. It is not about a student asking “How high?” when a teacher says “Jump”. Rather, it’s showing respect, so the instruction is heard. A student can respond, creating a 2 way dialogue. The teacher is a representative authority of the school, gaining the position through a process of vetting and employment. When an emergency arises, the teacher will do whatever it takes to ensure their safety. On the other hand, a teacher who doesn’t listen to their authority, or peers, or their students is quickly replaced. Government representatives should look to this example…
Elections create ambassadors for their area: local, state, & federal. They too are thoroughly vetted, and employed. Listening to their constituents is essential in the process. TX is entirely different than NY… is anyone surprised by that? The balance and respect is key. Our ambassador’s actions should reflect the humility, and patience for the great honor that has been bestowed upon them. Be honest, be above the fray, not dragging each other in the mud.
Rule 2 goes to the true character of a person. It gets harder each day to insist students not use profanity, not bully, not spew expletives towards peers and teachers. Placing obscene comments, even on the anonymity of facebook doesn’t provide debate, only chaos! Insistence on students being HONEST is most difficult, when politicians routinely can’t find the truth, or twist it to their position. Speaking of honesty… Locking WWII veterans out of DC’s Open Air Monument is not about truth, or a shut down. It’s all about an abuse of power. Funding attachments=defunding Obamacare.….
The last and final rule reflects stewardship. Someone had to pay for what is being used, making it stretch as far and as long as possible is essential. Since 2008, many families had a mere appetizer of what “The Great Depression” must have been like. Even if you’ve always, or recently gotten tight with a dollar…watch Ken Burn’s “The Dust Bowl”. The last few years pale in perspective to that level of sacrifice and suffering. Who among us has gone 3 days without eating?
We are spending more money, than what we make (statistics reflect on both personal and government levels). We are not respectful of taxes paid, or the benefits of entitlements . Our poor are getting poorer…. The vary programs designed to lift them up, are keeping them trapped in poverty!!! Let’s help our working poor to stay working, not be dependent on another program!
Raising the national debt may be inevitable… tightening belts, and working harder is fated . America has always been generous, and leads the world in taking care of it’s poor—this does not negate the fact $$ are limited. What kind of budget doesn’t balance? What happens when bills go unpaid? A person can’t do it! A business can’t! How does a government exist long with those parameters? Legacy NO!
We’ve lost our way.
2 new Indian immigrants reminded me this morning, the United States is the greatest opportunity on earth! They don’t however want to trade prospects for civility. Picking on doctors (or the elite as some have referenced) will not cure American woes either. They and 19 more of Cincinnati’s native born doctors (in specialties from Obstetrics to Orthopedics to Oncology to …) are generous beyond anyone’s expectations to charities +++ more. Many with no breaks, climbed and worked for decades to achieve success. The benefits of such hard toil are warranted tenfold!
Democracy depends on the common good. A people is only as strong as it’s work ethic, and character. The U.S. can still be a Source of Renewal and Vitality; Love and Action; Generosity and Innovation. Mirroring Jesus Christ even on a small basis … will allow us to break through the chatter. When Authenticity and Truth are longed for as treasure, Speaking for the poor and the vulnerable will not somehow be lost. God’s word has a lot to say about money and the poor… there is still time to arrive at respectful prioritie
