Late last night as the clock turned from 11:59 to 12:00 and September 30 became October 1, a right wing fringe of the GOP achieved its long sought dual goal of American government shutdown, and presidential showdown.
These hardcore conservatives know all too well that most operations of the federal government will continue on, unabated.
In places like Florida the first people to actually suffer because of the government shutdown will be dirt poor mothers and children seeking food assistance, and low-wage employees of federal parks like the Everglades that have already been closed.
But the congressional extremists who forced this to happen show no sincere concern about Americans citizens like those, with such little political power and influence. It's the Obama-hating supporters and primary voters back in their home districts that they're concerned with, hoping to prove to them that they actually have some power, and can show up the President of the United States.
Yet all they've demonstrated so far is the power to bring pain to the most disadvantaged and vulnerable among us, to poor and working poor people who desperately depend on government assistance.
It's worth noting that rather than demonstrating power, some would call that abuse of power.
And when it comes to showing up Barack Obama, just read what the president said today in front of The White House. Then decide who's showing up who:
"I'm not going to allow anybody to drag the good name of the United States of America through the mud just to re-fight a settled election or extract ideological demands. Nobody gets to hurt our economy and millions of hardworking families over a law you don't like...That's not how adults operate. Certainly, that's not how our government should operate."
Even though there are only 80 or so of these Tea Party-driven U.S. Representatives out of 435 total House members, the wacko congressional rules and weak Republican leadership of Speaker John Boehner combined to give them the showboating showdown they and their supporters have craved for years.
But they all ought to take a good hard look at today's new Quinnipiac poll that shows "American voters disapprove 74 - 17 percent of the job Republicans in Congress are doing, their lowest score ever".
If mainstream conservatives and Republicans do nothing to rescue the GOP from the extremist obstructionist power players behind this government shutdown, the Democratic Party will have no choice but to overcome its own inadequacies and become the dominant force in American politics and government.
