One of the casualties of the government shutdown that began at midnight is the communication with the public on the social media level. Several government agencies announced today they would be shutting down their Twitter accounts until funding is approved and furloughs have ended.
Many government agencies have developed social media accounts to better inform the public and answer questions on a personal level by using @ replies. Many of these agencies or particular staff members are now deemed non-essential and therefore will not be keeping up their social media accounts. At a time when updates and information would be beneficial to the public they will be denied.
While the military and other essential agencies will continue to run without disruption agencies such as NASA have been nearly disabled; employees are reporting for a half day only to perform shutdown procedures. An estimated 800,000 workers have been sent home without pay.
Many of those government agencies that will cease to function during the shutdown sent out a final tweet promising to return when the furloughs have ended.

The shutdown is due to the inability of the Senate and the House of Representatives to come to an agreement to temporarily fund the government; republicans wanting to tie a delay in Obamacare to the funding while Democrats refused to jeopardize the plan.
This is the first government shutdown since 1995 when funding for Medicare, education and the environment held up the 1996 federal budget for 28 days. The question is how long will this shutdown last?
