Will food stamps benefits be paid due to the U.S. government shutdown?

Congress failed to agree on a spending bill to keep government operations running by midnight on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, so many federal programs will be affected.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), otherwise known as food stamps, will continue to run in the event of a shutdown.

Government shutdown: What's open, what's closed during the shutdown?

Benefits are typically paid on the first of the month, so recipients will see their food stamp allotment appear on their EBT card on Tuesday, October 1.

In addition, the free breakfast and lunch program offered at schools nationwide will also continue to run.

However, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is not in operation until the shutdown is over.

The WIC program supplies pregnant women and children supplemental food, health care referrals and nutrition education.
