Hiking and picnicking plans will have to be put on hold this weekend and for the near future if those plans include national forest service areas or national parks.
The shut down of the federal government includes the U.S. Forest Service, which has been forced to close all of its recreational areas that require maintenance. Gates to the following local sites will be closed and locked:
- Blacksburg Shooting Range
- Boley Camping Field
- Caldwell Camping Fields
- Cascades Day Use Area
- Craig Creek Recreation Area
- Dragons Tooth
- Fenwick Mines Day Use Area
- Flat Top Trailhead
- Glen Alton Day Use Area
- Interior Whistle Stop Picnic Area
- Pandapas Pond Day Use Area
- Potts Shooting Range
- Roaring Run Day Use Area
- Steel Bridge Campground
- Pines Campground
- Walnut Flats Campground
- White Cedar Horse Camp
- White Rocks Campground
- Wolf Creek Day Use Area
All Virginia State Parks and recreational areas remain open; visit their website to find open and exciting natural spaces to explore.
