Government health care rationing has arrived, attacks women and the elderly

In a shocking lengthy governmental report it is apparent that the government is OK with women developing and dying of breast cancer provided that it will save the government money.

This report gives credence to Sarah Palin's allegation of death squads, but who would have expected it to come so soon. Conclusions made by the government go completely against the standard management of breast health that has been carefully developed and taught throughout the country in efforts to combat the  leading cause of cancer in women.

Until this latest governmental recommendation, women have been taught breast self exam in an effort to identify tumors at an earlier stage. Amazingly self breast exam is no longer recommended by the government. In fact they don't recommend any mammograms either until the age of 50! Those who are in medicine like me are astounded since we see many women with mammogram identified breast cancer in their 30's and 40's.

The government would rather that you live with your cancer until you reach 50 if you can survive that long. Also even though breast cancer increases with age, they say that no women over 75 should have a mammogram. I guess after that age, you might as well die anyway. You know you have to die from something so why burden the system and increase the cost of healthcare for us young people. Tell that to my 88 year old mother! When will people wake up to see what is happening.

If we sit back and watch the government destroy the quality of health care that we enjoy, we will never get it back. This telltale sign of the shape of things to come is shameful. How would you feel if your sister, wife, or mother dies because of these misguided edicts which will cause unnecessary mastectomies for late stage disease and deaths?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) immediately sent their members (myself included) a response denouncing the recommendations and recommending no change in the current screening guidelines that previously are in place.

"The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists continues to recommend the following services:

  • Screening mammography every 1-2 years for women aged 40-49 years
  • Screening mammography every year for women aged 50 years or older.
  • BSE; BSE (Breast self exam) has the potential to detect palpable breast cancer and can be recommended.
  • CBE(clinical breast exam) every year for women aged 19 or older"

It is disgraceful that the government would cheapen the value of women's lives to save a buck.
What will happen now because of this report is the denial of payment of mammography services by Medicare, Medicaid, and also all existing health care plans that will deem the services as unnecessary based on this governmental study. According to ACOG,

"USPSTF (United States Preventive Services task force) recognizes that its recommendations also have relevance for and are widely used by policymakers, managed care organizations, public and private payers, quality improvement organizations, research institutions, and patients"

This will undoubtedly lead to a rise in untreatable end stage breast cancer and unnecessary death. This is not where we need to go to save health care dollars. Identification and treatment of cancer at an early stage is the primary goal of most doctors. This report goes against everything that we have been taught. The Hippocratic Oath that we take states:

"I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone"

"I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure."

It is clear that his new governmental policy will do much harm and it is the American women who will be paying the ultimate price. Where have all the feminists gone? Who will stand up for the rights of women's health? When will honest Americans speak out against this government takeover?

If government run universal health care passes in the Senate we will face more bad policies which clearly will severely damage the quality of health care that we currently enjoy. What will they do next? Stop treating or euthanize patients with Alzheimer's disease? Euthanize the mentally challenged or paralytics? Their actions are reprehensible and show no compassion. Welcome to Obama care.

My father was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. His biopsy was performed as a result of elevated PSA levels. He described the procedure as: "having a cue ball shoved up my a--." And that was BEFORE the 12 needles were inserted into his prostate. One needle came back positive (5% of sample).

The end result? He should do nothing as he will probably die of natural causes before the cancer affects him.

So did he really NEED that biobsy? Did my mother have to cry for three days? Did I have to leave work early to go see him and then again to be at the biopsy? Did my pregnant sister need the stress only to find out... hey, it's not a big deal?

That's what they are trying to avoid.

First, we are talking about ROUTINE mamms. If you have a concern, your doctor CAN and WILL order tests. Second, this is ADVISORY. The full advice is to TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR.

You are doing a HUGE diservice to your readers by spouting this bull about death panels. You should be ashamed.

Apparently your Dad was fortunate enough to not have a severe case of cancer. And regardless of policy, false positives are an unavoidable aspect of screening tests. Nevertheless the United States is doing much better at screening for and curing patient's with this disease and it is because of our vigilance. According to ACOG there will be over 600 breast cancer deaths annually because of the recommended changes by the USPFTS. As mentioned , their policy dictates care for insurance companies, Medicare , and Medicaid. Yes we will save money, but people will die. Sorry for the unfortunate truth.

A wealthy Gyno’ objects to a change in the current medical systems frequency of mammogram exams, could he have ulterior motives perhaps?

...the quality of health care that “we” enjoy? And I suppose you frequnet JMH to obtain your medical treatment.

Your comments are motivated by greed and self interest. They are irresponsible and dangerous.

According to your ability and judgment? Sir, you relinquish that when you give credence to the incoherent ramblings of Palin.

Your comments are irresponsible and politically motivated. If you have any knowledge of the medical system you would know that the radiologists are the ones that profit from mammograms, not the OB/Gyns. You would also know that OB/Gyns are many women's primary care doctors who are concerned about the welfare of their patients. Also, although they don't profit from the mammograms they order they(OB/Gyns) are responsible for followup calls and followup referrals to surgeons for treatment. You probably are a man and have little personal need for a mammogram to be making such flippant comments.

The only death panels Palin can prove are the morons who shoot innocent wolves from a helicopter in Alaska - and that's called hunting? More like stabbing an unconscious baby in a bathtub. Question: does she put on her lipstick before she shoots the moose or before she gives him a BJ after he's dead?
