Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-Tx) believes that a government shutdown would be an impeachable offense for President Obama, according to the Huffington Post, October 14, 2013. The Texas Congressman, who was interviewed by a reporter from the Young Turks on Friday at the Values Voters Summit, said that he was not sure how he would vote on a debt ceiling compromise deal because he had concerns over the word, "deal." However, Gohmert was sure that if no deal was reached and the government were to go into default, that the blame could be laid squarely on President Obama and that impeachment charges could be drawn up against the President.
Gohmert did not state exactly what the specific impeachment charges against President Obama would be, but he did reverse the "negotiating with a gun to our head" rhetoric used by President Obama to describe the negotiating position in which he felt Republicans were putting him. Gohmert stated that he believed that it was the Democrats who were holding a gun to America's head and demanding that Americans charge more than "our children can ever pay for" as the debt ceiling rises.
Gohmert has been elected to Congress four times and serves on several judicial committees, including one on Judicial impeachment. He also served as a judge in Texas's 7th Judicial District before being elected to Congress.
