Gov. Quinn Promotes Ethical Standards and “Made in Illinois” on Morning Joe
By Ellen Cannon
Appearing on MSNBC’s “ Morning Joe” this morning Illinois Governor Pat Quinn came out swinging in favor of jobs and economic sustainability for Illinois, ending corruption, promoting ethics in government, and support for President Obama.
As might be expected, the first question Governor Quinn was asked centered on the fourteen year sentence that former Governor Blagojevich received yesterday.
For Joe Scarborough, the host of Morning Joe as well as a former congressman from Florida, the sentence was excessive. Scarborough argued that the sentence was political grandstanding calling it a “misplaced prosecutorial sentence”. “What the former governor did was horrible” claimed Joe Scarborough, but a 14 year sentence is outrageous.” Other commentators pointed out that rapist get far less of a sentence than the former governor.
Illinois Governor Pat Quinn did not share this view. He noted that it is “a stirring sentence; the book is closed; the governor has to go to jail.” “Illinois now has to say to the world that we have ethical standards and that we will never let this happen again.” Governor Quinn went on to state that, “The Governor of Illinois is a protector of the 13 million residents of our state. Our two predecessors are in jail. My job is to protect the people and state government. It is the only way to go.”
When asked to address the political cynicism toward government held by voters today Governor Quinn said, “I ran an election to be governor for four years. I ran with a belief in ethics, law, and the everyday people who are the heart and soul of our state. I ran with a commitment to our servicemen and women who serve as a model for our citizens.”
Governor Quinn is presently in Washington to press for more jobs for Illinois. When asked about his presence in Washington today, he underscored the achievement of his administration on job creation as well as his continued support for President Obama. He stated, Last month Illinois created 30,000 more jobs. ‘Made in America’ is what I want to hear and support. We have got to show the world that we in Illinois can do it.” He went on to underscore his continued support for President Obama and particular support for is Job Act which promotes a $31 billion investment in the nation’s clean water, infrastructure development and repair, and physical plant support for university facilities. “Put America back to work,” he strongly urged.
