Former Governor Ryan of Illinois was released from Federal Prison on Jan. 31, 2013. Former Gov. Thompson accompanied him to Chicago, IL. Gov. Ryan was suppose to be released to a halfway house in Chicago, but his fate was to return home to Kankakee, IL. Gov. Ryan was a Republican and faced one of the worst capital punishments.
There were two Governors in Federal Prison; former Gov. Blagojevich who is serving a 14 year term for corruption, in Colorado.
A jury convicted Gov. Ryan in 2006 of racketeering, conspiracy, tax fraud, and making false statements to the FBI. When Ryan was secretary of state and as a governor, he steered state business to insiders, for vacations and gifts while he was governor.
He suffered from his term as a federal prisoner, he was not allowed to attend his wife of 55 years' funeral. He was allowed to visit her during her terminal illness. He has suffered with health problems, that included kidney disease. The government waived his going to a halfway house, and instead let him go back home, to Kankakee, IL.
Former Governor Thompson did visit him and was with him when he was released from prison. He is currently 78 years old and the authorities granted him his retirement status, so he would not have to get a job at his age.
The State of Illinois has been noted for their governors being prosecuted and sent to prison. He can only go out to the doctor, and go to church with prior permission from the authorities.
