Newest From Michigan’s Church Tackle--Stern Planer Boards

Michigan-based pro fisherman Mark Martin helped develop these TX-007 stern planer boards after having great success using empty water bottles as floats during walleye tournaments. The system allows you to catch the fish that return behind your boat after it passes over a school, and increases your catch rate dramatically. Find them at your favorite well-stocked tackle shop. Track down instructions as well as Youtube videos on its proper use, and look for a story in an upcoming issue of Woods N Water News about them. I know I’ll be using them this season, too.

Send'em To School

Speaking of Mark Martin, the famed walleye pro who's based in Twin Lake near Muskegon is putting on at least two of his very sought-after ice fishing schools. The first will be in Jan. 5-8 on Lake Gogebic in the western Upper Peninsula, and the second will be on the ice of Saginaw Bay Feb. 9-12. He and other pros and his learned pro staff spend time with each student going over proper tackle off the ice, and techniques from jigging actions to properly setting up electronics, on the ice. Contact Tim or Sarah Long at Gogebic's Timbers Resort at 906-575-3542, and for Saginaw Bay, Linwood Beach Marina, 989-697-4415, or call Mark at 231-744-0330.

Gear ‘Grabbar’ Magnetic Lure Hangar

Here’s another great made-in-Michigan product that I can’t wait to try this spring. Instead of getting stabbed by lure hooks, the Gear Grabbar—spell it grabber and you won’t find it on the Internet—incorporates small, powerful magnets to hang your favorite lures out of the way and keep them off the floor and out of you and your friends. Mount it along your boat’s gunwale and you’ll soon be using it all season.

A Real Avid Shooter? Use Real Avid Cleaners

If you’re an avid target shooter or hunter, you may already know about the innovative products from Real Avid. Everything from lighted knives, to this one, a new compact firearm cleaning systems, in either cable or rod forms. Handles allow brushes to rotate with your firearm’s rifling, making for easier cleaning. ZipMax CLP is a highly viscous all-in-one synthetic cleaning fluid and lubricant without that solvent smell. It will actually penetrate into the metal with repeated uses, and lubricates effectively to -45F.

Learn Secrets Of Trolling For Big Water Walleyes

Ohio-based outdoor writer Chip Gross probes Great Lakes fishing guides, charter captains and walleye pros to help you learn how to consistently come back to the dock with more fish in your livewell with his new book, Trolling For Big Water Walleyes, available through and other outlets.

Natural Bug Solutions For Summer

If you’re outdoors a lot, chances are you’ll get your share of minor cuts, along with dry eyes from long hours in the sun, summer or winter. Try these two all-natural products from ACU-LIFE. Tea Tree Oil is an all-natural antiseptic that’s also good for everything from athlete’s foot to cold sores. It’s anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and relieves minor pain from bites. Also try its Nature’s Tears Eyemist. In a small spray can, it delivers a fine mist to your eyes, and provides a cooling effect as well. A great product.

Whether you’re a woman or a long-haired man, you might consider a Peekaboos hat, made especially if you need a ponytail outlet. Made of wool with a fleece ear lining, and that hidden ponytail opening, it comes in three styles.

Copenhagen Wheel

This unique concept for a bicycle takes auto-based technology and re-invents the bike wheel. A wheel that helps you pedal has seen several forms, including one with a tiny motor powered by a battery under your bike seat, but nothing like this.

Developed by MIT, together with the city of Copenhagen, hence its name, the Copenhagen Wheel takes the place of your other rear wheel, turning your bike into a hybrid electric that you control through an app on your smartphone.

It’s been touted as the answer to daily in-city commutes, as it powers you up to 20 mph, or as much as 37 mph before a governor reduced its top speed to accommodate U.S. biking standards.

Michigan Recreation Passport

What a great gift for anyone anytime. For just $11 for residents, the Michigan DNR Recreation Passport gives you: unlimited access to all Michigan state parks, all recreation areas, and all boat launches. Prior to the passport, you had to purchase one pass for parks, and another for boat launches, costing more than $30. All visitors to Detroit’s Belle Isle also will now need a passport as of their birthday. You can’t beat this deal.

Fix It 'N Zip It

Got a zipper on a sleeping bag or a nice coat that you're looking to toss because the zipper's gone off track? Try the new Fix nZip and repair that zipper without tools, thread or needles or expensive visits to put in a new one at the tailor.
