The Deafening, are a New York City band, based in Brooklyn, made up of Lena Hall (vocals), Burt Rock (guitar), Dylan Doyle (bass) and Mick Harrison (drums). The band mixes the seventies and eighties in both sound and on-stage exploits.
The bands formed in 2007, and were initially a glam-hair band. Since, their sound has changed, blending more punk and classic rock; however, the “big stage attitude” has only gotten larger. The Deafening have developed a rep around New York City as a can’t-miss band with memorable live shows, attempting to turn each performance into a party.
Rock and roll and horror movies are often a natural match. The Deafening released their first full album in 2012 titled Central Booking. The final track, “Death Rattle N’ Roll” was accompanied by a very low budget and humorous video that captured the sound and attitude of the band. Their latest video for the song “Dress You Up” continues with the spirit of rock and roll, humor, and horror.
The video begins with a guy and girl together in bed. The guy receives a text message and decides to leave his phone (big mistake). The girl looks and suspects her guy is cheating on her so she disguises herself and follows him. Her incognito look consists of a wig, big sunglasses, and a (the always underrated) set of binoculars. At times, to hide from view, she also uses a newspaper (very old-school). What she finds is that apparently her dude is a real player with everyone. There’s the blond girl at the flower shop, brunette at the jewelry store, and a guy he shares an ice cream with. That’s not a euphemism, dude is a hardcore player!
On stage the band is dressed up with nooses around their necks that slowly begin lifting as if they are committing suicide. Back to the cheating boyfriend scene: The girl decides to fix matters by buying an axe. It’s a very large axe that she holds firmly while walking briskly to go kill her cheating boyfriend. What does she find? Why it’s a surprise party for her complete with the blond, brunette, and ice cream man. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter, once you buy an axe you have to murder someone. It’s a rule. She murders all of them, left with cake, lots of blood blood, and her pet dog. Oh, look, she’s a dog person. How cute.
