Gotham Sleaze: Ten Ton Mojo

Dirty Rock N’ Roll from the Streets of New York City

"Mojo" (pron.: /ˈmoʊdʒoʊ/), in the African-American folk belief called hoodoo, is an amulet or a spell carried on a person's body -- a "prayer in a bag" -- containing an assortment of magical items. That's also a pretty accurate description of that other mixed bag, Rock and Roll.

Ten Ton Mojo is a New York City rock band on the rise. Their music brings a southern vibe mixed with heavy guitar rock and roll; this band is easy on the ears and sleazy for the soul. Ten Ton Mojo is made up of Ernie Papp (vocals), Scott Lano (guitar), Gabe Mera (guitar), Fernando Rosario (bass), and Paul Kane (drums).

Their first release, a self-titled album with the single “Pinball Girl” (featured in the movie Pinball Donut Girl) puts out the type of music most rockers will enjoy: high on energy with a slice of bluesy swagger. “Pinball Girl” is straight up Southern grit while the song “Got The Light On” sounds like revenge, rock and roll revenge. The kind of revenge Quentin Tarantino writes about. “Gotta Get That Love” is heavy. Heavy on guitars and heavy pulling on the deep blues heart strings. It’s hard to guess musical influences, especially after listening to “One and Only”, a tune that is fast and a little punk. Classic rock is really the only constant in the sound, which the band combines with blues, Southern and punk rock. It also appears that Ernie Papp enjoys performing barefoot. This has nothing to do with the music, but some might find interesting. My personal favorite tune (from what I’ve heard from this band) is “Ain’t That Right”, a fast, straight-up catchy rock song that makes you want to go on an adventure and do bad (read: fun) things!

The past year this band has been all over New York City: Arlene’s Grocery, Irving Plaza, etc… If you haven’t seen them, find them and check out this band on the way up. Also, check out their music. Ten Ton Mojo is a nice scar (read: addition) in the NYC music scene today.
