This is the Sound of the Underground – “W.T.F.R.U.”, SEX SLAVES
Rock and roll outlaws with little regard for the status quo. With a rock-hard-or-go-home motto, a crass sense of humor, and a DIY attitude; meet New York City’s Sex Slaves.
Sex Slaves are a New York City based band made up of the debauchery driven group of eric13 (vocals, guitar), J Bomb (drums), and Del Cheetah (bass, vocals). The trio perfectly balances their music (which they each individually take very seriously) and dirty filthy on stage rock star presence. The band has been together since 2003, released four albums, and constantly tour across the globe. Fun Fact: Each band member worked at Three of Cups bar in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, J Bomb as a bartender, eric13 as a DJ, and Del Cheetah as a waiter.
Both their debut album, Nikki, and sophomore release, Bite Your Tongue, relied on sleazy pop metal hooks and diseased lyrics. Bite Your Tongue introduced Sex Slaves classics “We’re Going Out Tonight”, bleeding punk and rock over a bed of pop melody as well as “Thank You Lord For Jack Daniels”, a bluesy rocker that may be the best Blues Brothers song never recorded by the Blues Brothers. The third release, Wasted Angel, and latest album, Call of the Wild, find the band pushing their limits and expanding their sound to include thrash and grunge. It’s easy to see this is not a band easily categorized into one rock genre. Critics of this band point to this as a negative, questioning their direction and the continuity of their sound. As usual, they are missing the point. This is precisely what makes Call of the Wild such a great diverse rock album, the type of album most bands would be afraid of making.
Call of the Wild moves from a classic heavy metal rocker “Lose That Dress” to the Alice in Chains like “Call of The Wild” with ease. Followed up by a classic Sex Slaves sleazy- pop tune “Cool Ride” and you realize quickly this band doesn’t have one formula, but rather a pact to create great songs. If it’s possible to be surprised by this group I would say the thrash metal “Sik Fuk” (which sounds as good as anything Suicidal Tendencies ever released) was unexpected. If you haven’t checked out this band you should; there is something for everyone. And if you haven’t heard of them, well they answer this in the opening track titled “W.T.F.R.U.”; we are the Sex Slaves – who the f**k are you?
