Videos today pretty much suck, just bands playing live on a stage with footage that may have been shot by an iPhone. Few bands today make videos fun and meaningful; instead their videos are just advertisements for their singles. Real videos and bands proud to create a story are becoming increasingly harder to find. New York City rockers, The Pretty Reckless, are one of the few bands still making good videos and have released a new video for their song “Messed Up World” from the album Messed Up World released this year. The Pretty Reckless is made up of Taylor Momsem (vocals, guitar), Ben Phillips (guitar), Mark Damon (bass) and Jamie Perkins (drums). This is the third single and video from the Going To Hell album.
As the video starts I’m reminded of the night beach scene of Point Break, but sadly there is no Johnny Utah here. Momsem is playing the tambourine with hot models littered throughout the surrounding sandy beach. However, there are a lot of naked girls and suggestive gyrating as well as a lot of beach blanket grabby-grab shenanigans and girly-girl teasing. I’m not sure on the intent of the message of this video, but the NOT A WHORE message didn't really clear anything up for me. The squirt guns were the surprise of the day for me, The Pretty Reckless rarely shy away from unwarranted violence and this was a perfect opportunity for live ammunition. The song itself has a lot of energy and really ratchets up at the end (as do the lesbian scenes). I guess the message has something to do with everything is about sex and love and something about cigarettes. I conquer. Still, one Johnny Utah cameo would have been sweet!
