Don’t look now, but the rock scene continues to heat up in New York City. One of the new bands contributing to this inferno is Circus Life. Members of this hard rock outfit include Tommy Zamp as lead vocalist and guitarist, Steve “Jakk” Kutch on bass and Rev Swank on drums. If you have been lucky to catch Circus Life live you understand the intensity this band brings via their stage presence and straight up rock and roll sound (if you haven’t, reminder: YouTube). New, but already seasoned veterans of the New York venues, Circus Life have played Gramercy Theatre, Sullivan Hall, and Bowery Electric. This past June the band headlined and sold out Arlene’s Grocery for their Little Secrets record release party.
It’s scary that Little Secrets is the band’s debut album because it is phenomenal. From start (“Blown Away”) to finish (“Muse”) Circus Life brings it consistently hardnosed with an edge. With heavy-gritty guitars, high-end production, fist-in-the-air hooks, and Layne Staley-like vocals, this band is the real deal. Essential tracks include: “Blown Away”, “Dose”, “Jet Black Leather & Lace”, “Little Secrets”, and “Quicky Licky Nicky.”
The band recently put out a video for “Blown Away”, a debut of sorts for Circus Life and the album Little Secrets. The video alternates from the band performing on stage and their apartments/neighborhood. On stage the raw energy is on display. Off stage we don’t learn too much except that Circus Life really enjoys their beer in can form. Most of the video feels like watching the group run errands on their day off. Of course, this particular day they were working on the video and had to run errands so that sucks. That’s okay though, based on their debut, I am expecting this is just the start for this band. Soon, they will be able to upgrade to bottles of beer.
