The DC Universe is officially moving into primetime network TV territory according to the programming line-up for the 2014 Fox Upfronts conference on Monday, May 12. The new Fox schedule includes five new dramas, two new event series, four new comedies and, one new unscripted series.
Getting a majority of the hype is "Gotham", which is set to tell the tale of a young Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) in the Batman-centric city of corruption before it was plagued by villains and protected by a caped crusader. This should could literally make or break Fox this year. It's a bold challenge trying to put together a Batman show that won't ever actually feature the Dark Knight.
The show plans to feature the origins of villains like the Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman, and yes, the Joker, as well as the childhood of Bruce Wayne. But will the show be able to cater to both hardcore and casual fans? And how will it handle it's canon while CW's "Arrow" and "The Flash" are on air, not to mention the next DC feature film, "Batman vs. Superman", none of which will actually tie in with "Gotham"? Fox is hoping it won't matter. Stay tuned, Bat-fans.
The wild card in Fox's lineup could be the sitcom, "Mulaney", starring stand up comic and writer John Mulaney. NBC passed on the show last year, but if the show is able to capture Mulaney's comic genius, it could end up being a great move for Fox. "Mulaney" co-stars and Martin Short, Nasim Pedrad, and Elliot Gould.
One major change to the network's schedule involves one of the surprise hits of this TV season. "Brooklyn Nine-Nine", which took home the Golden Globe for Best Comedy as well as Best Actor in a Comedy for Andy Samberg, moves to Sunday night and will be paired with "Mulaney" as the follow up for the Animation Domination block that includes "Bob's Burgers", "The Simpsons", and "Family Guy".
Fox also gave the ax to several shows including "Dads", "Enlisted", "Surviving Jack", and "Rake"; and passed on new pilots, "Dead Boss," "Fatrick" and "No Place Like Home".
