DJ Kool Herc played the first Hip Hop parties in the Bronx in a park and in his apartment on Sedgwrick and Cedar to be exact. DJ Marley Marl gave radio play that sparked the careers of many of the MCs we listen to today. DJ King Tech got folks all over the world to keep their ears locked on the "Wake Up!" show.
The DJ reigns supreme in the Hip Hop scene and in Honolulu, this man is holding it down. DJ Bone of the Got Rice? Show has been playing music from local Hip Hop artists since 2000. He has promoted the Honolulu Hip Hop sound on KTUH 90.3FM every Wednesday night from 9PM to midnight, providing a platform for local audiences to connect with what is being produced on their island.
When asked what his goals are, DJ Bone replied, "We have a lot of talent here that should be heard. At the very least I want to see Hip Hop become more steady and viable in Hawaii..." Which shows that he is dedicated to pumping music to keep the veins of Honolulu Hip Hop music alive.
His collection of Hawai'i Hip Hop music is outstanding. In one show, he could play exclusivly all local Hip Hop artists. And he does it with the Aloha spirit with a segment of Got Rice? called "Show and Prove." This gives new artists an opportunity to get radio play and recieve instant feedback from listeners.
DJ Bone has always wanted to do radio and is persuing his professional dreams and continuing the legacy of legendary Hip Hop DJs by providing a party with local sound. In addition, he promotes events and visiting Hip Hop artists to keep the Honolulu Hip Hop scene inspired and hungry. He wants the world to respect Hip Hip music coming out of Hawai'i.
Got Rice? Show can be heard on the worldwide web live on Wednesdays from 9PM-12AM HST at KTUH.org. However, if you are on Oahu tune into 90.3FM in Honolulu, 89.9FM on Windward side, or 91.3FM in the North Shore. The show is also on Digital Cable 866. He also documents his playlist on his blog.
"My role currently is a provider. As a DJ on KTUH, I provide a Hip Hop alternative to what you hear on the big Hip Hop radio stations here in Hawaii. As a promoter I provide a stage for artist to rock and gain experience. I also provide a place that the Hawaii Hip Hop "heads" can hangout and get their shine." - DJ Bone.
