I hear it every day.."I am so freaked out, I already threw away all our brushes and pillows!". It's very easy to sterilize combs and brushes. Just clean them out, mist with an enzyme spray, (if you happen to have that, like Nit-Free brand or Absolute Clear brand). After that, two choices...gather up all brushes, combs, hair bands, hair accessories, etc. and put them in a ziplock in the freezer, overnight. The other choice is to put combs and brushes into the dishwasher (where the silverware goes). Lice eggs/nits are in amniotic fluid. You can poison them and you can't suffocate them, because they don't have a nervous system or a respiratory system. To kill eggs/nits, you can freeze them or fry them. The freezer freezes the amniotic fluid, and they die. You'd think the hot, soapy water in the dishwasher would kill them - WRONG! It's the dry cycle in the dishwasher that kills eggs/nits. Last thought re: combs and brushes. We suggest going to dollar tree and getting a 2nd set of brushes, one for each family member. Our favorite brushes in my salon are from Dollar Tree!) Also get some colored hair bands and 'color code' everyone's brush so you DON'T SHARE them. Your daughter is 'pink', you are 'purple' your son is 'blue' etc. So don't forget: freeze them or fry them, but don't throw them away!
