Gospel singer Bishop F.C. Barnes dies

Gospel singer Bishop F. C. Barnes died this morning. Barnes, who was widely known for “Rough Side of the Mountain”, as well as many other hits, was 82.

Barnes began singing in quartets when he was 14 years old. He would later record six albums with Rev. Janice Brown, and “Rough Side of the Mountain” became the most popular.  According to Malaco Records, the album of the same title remained #1 on the gospel charts for more than a year, selling over 500,000 copies. A native North Carolinian, Barnes received The North Carolina Folk Heritage Award on September 12th, 2000. In 2010 he was inducted into the American Gospel Quartet Convention (AGQC) Hall of Fame in Birmingham, AL.

The Stellar and Dove nominated singer also appeared on several LP's with his son, gospel singer Luther Barnes. In 2010 his last album, The Old Time Way was nominated for a Stellar Award. Last year Barnes contributed to the Darrell Luster on The single, "God Is God (He Don't Change)," which received considerable airplay.
