Gospel community mourns the loss of singer-songwriter Sam Booker (Photos)

Music icon Sam “Earthquake” Booker, passed away on Friday, September 16, 2011, in Nashville (Tennessee). A native Tennessean, he began his singing career performing rhythm and blues tunes in nightclubs throughout the city of Chicago (Illinois), sharing the stage with such artists as Sam Cooke, The Spinners, Billy “The Kid” Emerson, and Otis Clay.

Growing weary of the nightclub scene, he returned to Nashville and shifted his focus to his first love, gospel music. In 2000, he released his first gospel CD, titled B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bible). The CD received critical acclaim, cementing his position as a music icon. In a magazine interview following the release, he commented, “Dreams do come true…I’ve worked hard all of my life to get where I am today... Truly, I have been blessed.”

Sam will be laid to rest on Saturday, September 24, 2011. He will be greatly missed.
