The Washington Area Music Awards (WAMA), known as the Wammies, recognize significant career achievements by area musicians. Gospel artists are also recognized and several artists from the DC area have been nominated.
Rob Mercer leads the pack with two nominations, Gospel Inspirational Vocalist and Gospel Inspirational Recording for "The Photo Album." The celebrated world-renowned Howard Gospel Choir of Howard University captured a nomination for Gospel Inspirational Group/Choir.
According to its website, WAMA's goal is to promote Washington area music in general and to achieve national recognition of the region as an important center for live and recorded music. WAMA's membership includes all musical styles from classical, bluegrass, go-go, R&B, and reggae, to rock, jazz and folk.
Voting ends Thursday Feb. 6 at 10 p.m. EST. Only current WAMA Members can vote on nominees. However non-members can vote for their Fan Favorite by casting their vote for their favorite band or artist by noon on Wednesday, Feb. 12 Click here to vote.
The 28th Annual Wammies Award Show will be held Sunday, Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. at the State Theatre in Falls Church, Va. The theatre is located at 220 N Washington St, Falls Church, VA 22046. To order tickets, click here.
