Maybe you are a person who lives or works near the Old Port. Maybe you also happen to be person who is a lover of gelato. If so, you may have had occasion to stop in at Gorgeous Gelato, 434 Fore Street in the Old Port. Donato Giovine and Mariagrazia Zanardi came to the conclusion, after much searching (of both geography as well as souls) that Portland was the place for them to start their new business, as well as their new life.
They were well received.
And why not? They produce a superior product. Their shop is abundantly upbeat, welcoming, and cheerful, as are all of the staff working there. The gelato that is displayed in the case immediately to your right as you enter is indeed gorgeous, just as they've promised, just as you'd expect. The colors of the gelato are so beautiful, the sight of it just may take your breath away...go with friend so that you can hold each other up, just in case, until you get your "gelato legs" under you.
These are professionals who know how to provide excellent service, even under difficult conditions. For example, if you visited the shop one evening this past summer, you would have discovered that a component of the equipment that keeps the gelato display case at the correct temperature wasn't working properly so they emptied it out. Next, so as not to disappoint customers, some who had traveled some distance to obtain a dish of their favorite delicious gelato (half a scoop of strawberry and half a scoop of coconut...sublime), they had pre-scooped the gelato into dishes and stored them in another freezer. Presto! Perfect, delicious gelato.
Hopefully, you are also a loyal person, a loyal customer, because the Gorgeous Gelato shop will now have to operate under another type of difficult condition…a competitor just so happened to choose 428 Fore Street (yes! Right across the street from Gorgeous!) as the site of their new shop.
What a coincidence! This news may remind you of an old saying: Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should do it. The word 'fiasco' may come to mind...and not in a good way.
Gorgeous Gelato is open Sunday through Wednesday, 10am to 9pm and Thursday through Saturday: 10am to 11pm. (Continue to) Go there! They rock gelato!
