The Eatontown Lions Club hosted their Ninth Annual Lighthouse 5K at Sandy Hook, N.J. on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Assisting at the event were Phil and Penny Hinck of Monmouth Beach and the Jersey Shore Running Club.
The event returned back to Sandy Hook after the race had to be moved to Eatontown last year due to the detestation from Hurricane Sandy at Sandy Hook.
The 5K race started at 9:30 a.m. near the Lighthouse at the tip of the Hook under near perfect conditions with a sunny sky, hardly any wind and moderate temperatures.It ws simply a gorgeous day for the event.
It was a flat and fast 5K course which started appropriately by the Lighthouse on Sandy Hook.
The event benefited the New Jersey Blind Citizens Association and Camp Happiness - a nonprofit resource set up to provide education and activities for all members.
Coming in first for the men was Jay Vilde of Point Pleasant in a time of 20:21 followed by Chris LeBreque of Oceanport in 21:44 and then TJ Fabrizio of Ocean in 22:18.
For the women breaking the tape was Taryn Landers of Belmar in 20:27. She was followed by Jennifer Gunn in 23:07 and then Catherine DeSousa of Oceanport (age 8) in 23:22.
Age group winners were: Matt Fabrizio of Ocean in 24:17; Antononia Simunek of Metuchen in 26:34; Pat Lombardi of Holmdel in 24;14; Joelle Vitale of Metuchen in 26:54; Chris Fotache of Middletown in 22:46; Gwen Nee of Leonardo in 23:40; Dean Brown of Little Silver in 23:03; Arnie Haran of Highlands in 24:26; Rich Macko of Aberdeen in 23:17; Cindy Donavan of Allentown, Pa. in 27:20; Mark Guberman of Englishtown in 25:47; Barbara Donelik of Middletown in 26:00; Marilyn Ryder of Eatontown in 30:56.
According to Race Director, Joe Freeman of Eatontown, N.J., “The Eatontown Lions Club thanks all who came out on this gorgeous day to participate in the race.”
