Amanda Kessel kept going on her quest to terrorize the goalies of the WCHA by getting a pure hat trick in Friday night's contest with the Minnesota State Mavericks. The Gophers got a few more goals in route to a 8-1 blowout of MSU in Mankato.
The Gophers would get out to a fast start in this game when Rachael Bona tipped in a pass from Kelly Terry past starting goaltender Danielle Butters. Bona's eighth goal would come just a 1:05 into the game. Lauren Smith would answer for the Mavericks just over a minute later to tie the game. It would turn out to be the lone goal and it would be as close as the Mavericks would get. Rachel Ramsey would take the lead right back on a delayed penalty in which Minnesota had the extra attacker on the ice. Becky Kortum would close out the scoring in the first period with her 10th goal of the season. Minnesota dominated the shots on goal, 18-5.
Noora Raty had started the game in net, but would be replaced by Amanda Leveille to start the second period. The freshman had not given up a goal in her limited action this season and was looking to keep that streak alive. The second period was not about Leveille though, it was all about Amanda Kessel. Kessel put in a pure hat trick in the second period, scoring on a short-handed, power play, and even strength goals. The goals all came within five minutes of each other as she scored at 8:40, 9:43, and 13:02. Her last goal was her 34th of the season and it gave her the fourth hat trick on the year. The Gophers again outshot the Mavericks badly, 14-3.
In the third period the Gophers would finish off MSU with a couple more goals. Meghan Lorence would get her sixth of the season and Bona would grab her second of the night. Leveille would hold strong in net and turned away all eight shots she faced in the game. The Gophers would end up outshooting the Mavericks 45-12. A resounding win for the Gophers, 8-1. The streak keeps going with 31 straight wins including 23 this season.
Noora Raty gets the win for Minnesota, notching her 97th career win.
The same two teams meet today at 3:07pm at All Seasons Arena.
