Minnesota (7-1) narrowly escape Cornell (2-6) at Williams Arena Saturday night.
Ralph Sampson III and Blake Hoffarber both scored 13 points while Trevor Mbakwe racked up his fifth double-double of the season scoring 12 (all from the free throw line) and collecting 16 rebounds.
Cornell's Chris Wrobleski and Errick Peck each had 16 points despite the Big Red's 21-60 (35%) shooting from the field.
The game was close throughout, but the Gophers held a 34-33 at halftime lead with back to back three-point plays from Rodney Williams.
Cornell's 32 team fouls gave the Gophers 44 trips to the free throw line and helped seal the win in the closing minute of play with free throws from Mbakwe.
The Gophers play next at St. Joseph on Wed. Dec. 8.
