In a key GOP upset, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, R-PA, has swept all three Republican contests held Tuesday, denying front-runner Mitt Romney a fourth victory.
Santorum won the Colorado and Minnesota caucuses plus the Missouri non binding primary. Romney was expected to win big in Colorado based upon his strong organization and the fact that he beat John McCain resoundingly in the state in 2008.
But Republican voters this year appear to be increasingly hesitant about Romney. At the same time, Rick Santorum's favorability rating is on the rise. Overall Santorum enjoys a 70% favorability rating, according to CNN's analysts who provided analysis following the vote.
Further, Republican voters now view Santorum as the conservative alternative to Romney by a 70% plurality. Newt Gingrich had carried that distinction until this week when his numbers began to fall. Gingrich is now viewed as the conservative alternative by 50% of Republicans.
These figures were provided by CNN's Wolf Blitzer and John King last evening.
Perhaps the biggest disappointment of the evening was for Newt Gingrich who managed to garner only a 3rd or 4th place finish in the evening's contests. Gingrich insists that his numbers will change once the primaries move south into Texas and other conservative states.
Meanwhile, Ron Paul came in 2nd in Minnesota and has a very strong plan to pick up delegate support from the state.
But the clear winner was Rick Santorum, who is proving that he has strong appeal among evangelical Christians, traditional Catholics, blue collar Democrats, and fiscal conservatives. With eight Republican contests now history, Santorum has won four, Romney three, and Gingrich one.
