Yesterday’s press conference had President Obama in his most petulant churlish self. He said he was willing to compromise on the fiscal crisis but not negotiate. This is similar to leading a horse to water but allowing no drinking.
John Boehner wasn't impressed on the president’s press conference according to Fox News: “What the president said today was, if there's unconditional surrender by Republicans, he'll sit down and talk with us. That's not the way our government works."
The government shutdown is showing us that the U.S. is having a serious debate about the size of the state and the long-term sustainability of its debts, something that the rest of the Western World isn't doing. It’s beginning to take on the character of something important.
The shutdown is taking its toll on the president’s approval rating, which has cratered to 37% approving with 53% disapproving. But you won’t hear this from mainstream media such as Associated Press, which was all the AP could crow about when former president Bush’s approval first hit 37%. If you need more proof of the media carrying water for Obama, this is yet another example.
This brings me to a point that has been suggested by those close to the politics. Some believe only big media is winning. Furthermore, they believe the media gives the Democrats their marching orders, not the other way around. Think about that for a while.
Obama seems to be getting worried as we approach the deadline for default. Democrats are finally getting the point that they can’t spend this country into oblivion. And, the Democrats are going to suffer because of this in the midterm elections as Americans won’t forget what this president has done to their lives.
