GOP Senator John Ensign admits to extramarital affair

Senator John Ensign (R), Nevada, issued a statement today admitting that he had an affair with a campaign staffer last year.  Ensign said that he and his wife had become close friends with the other woman and her husband.  Ensign didn't name the woman involved.

Ensign told the Associated Press, "I deeply regret and am very sorry for my actions."

Senator Ensign is a conservative Republican who many in the party considered a rising star before today.  Many considered him a good pick for the presidential election in 2012.

Senator Ensign was one of the leading voices calling for Senator Larry Craig, also a Republican, to resign in 2007 following Craig's airport restroom sex scandal.

In 2004, Senator Ensign issued a press release on his website titled, "Ensign Defends Sanctity of Marriage on Senate Floor."  He was a proponent of the Federal Marriage Amendment Act and told the Senate that his state had already amended the state constitution "to guarantee the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman."

Is there any way to spell hypocrite other than "Ensign". Is this the same guy who called for the resignation of Bill Clinton and later describe Larry Craig as a "disgrace". I am wondering whether he will apply the same standards to himself. It is an interesting kind of "family values" that he is promoting, the more I think about it: have an affair to test your marriage and admit it later so that your marriage can get stronger. Nice!

But cheating on your wife and lying about it is acceptable to libs isn't it?
"I did not have sexual relations with that women."

jbaud, get your facts straight before you spout lies like Jenny does.
Ensign was first elected to the Senate in 2000.

Spout lies like Karen does, not Jenny.

So jbaud, when you start a post with a lie, how are we to take the rest of it?

Karen, did you write about Presidential candidate John Edwards who cheated on his wife who was dying of cancer? Who MANY on the left wanted to be President?

Ya gotta admit, he is showing some class. After all, he could have taken her for a nice drive off a short bridge like Teddy.

    No surprise there. Hypocrites abound.

Politics is loaded with hypocrites from the local small town levels to Washington, whether republican or democrat, conservative or liberal, when they are exposed it is a good thing.

He did what Democrats have never done and resigned his leadership position.

    As well he should have.
If only Democrats had the honor to do the right thing.
See: Jefferson, Clinton, Dodd, Frank, etc. etc...

Sarah Palin resigns from her leadership role in Alaska, but not John Ensign? What does this tell you about leadership? Locals in Las Vegas leave to find an education for their children elsewhere. John Ensign is investigated by the Federal government. With a best friend like Ensign, who needs to vote?
