As the war between Israel and Palestine continues, one Republican congressman is using it to his advantage with the hopes that the United States will engage in a war with Iran.
The Israel-Palestine conflict is something that has gone on for hundreds of years. The most recent round of violence started after three Israeli teenagers were abducted and murdered by members of the militant group known as Hamas. A Palestinian teenager was then burned alive and killed in apparent revenge killing and the newest battle begun. Since those attacks, thousands of rockets have been shot by both sides, but Israel started a ground attack last resulting in nearly 700 Palestinian deaths over the last two weeks, the overwhelming majority being civilian causalities.
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) took to the House floor to lend his thoughts on the matter and stated that all funding to groups in or around Israel who support Hamas in anyway, should be cut.
“Mr. Speaker, in Israel right now, there is a battle for peace...They are being embattled by a group who teach their children, in the educational materials we help pay for, to hate Jews, to hate Israelis. They teach the people to hate Israelis as well. They name streets and holidays after people who kill innocent people...It is time to cut off every dime of American money going to anyone who has any kind of relationship with Hamas or those killing in the Middle East, and especially in Israel."
There is debate about United States' funding to Israel, to the tune of over $3 billion a year, but Gohmert took the conversation in a different direction, this time suggesting the United States should bomb Iran because of what is going on in Gaza.
“It is time to bomb Iran’s nuclear capabilities. It is time for the United States, if we are not going to stop Iran’s nukes, then let Israel do it. A friend will not put another friend in this kind of jeopardy.”
Iran appears to be complying with recent sanctions imposed on them, but that doesn't seem to stop some of the conservative hawks in congress, such s Gohmert. The United States is a point where they are looking on the outside in when it comes to major foreign conflicts. but because the U.S. as their fingers in all areas around the world, nothing seems out of bounds. For a country so sick and tired of being at war, wasting thousands of lives and trillions of dollars in the process, bombing Iran would seem like the last thing that should happen.
