GOP critical of Sarah Palin for quitting as governor of Alaska

AP Photo/Runner's World, Brian Adams

Karl Rove, Deputy Chief of Staff in the George W. Bush administration, said of Sarah Palin's announcement she was stepping down as governor,

It is not clear what her strategy is here.

A Fox news commentator said he had no idea what she (the governor) was talking about, or where she was going with her speech.

Republican conservative columnist George Will said of Palin's speech,

I've read it once and seen it twice and I still have no idea why she did this.

Republican strategist, Tim Griffin, a Bush advisor, said,

...She does have broad appeal to a lot of rank and file Republicans, but I want to make it very clear...I am part of the rank and file.  I live in Little Rock, Arkansas and what I want is, I want leaders within the Republican party to do well and to take steps that make sense and I simply don't think that quitting in the middle of her term as governor, makes sense.

Mike Huckabee called her decision to quit "a risky strategy" if she is planning to stay in politics with an eye toward running for president in 2012.

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski spoke of Palin's decision to step down as governor of Alaska, saying that Palin had "decided to abandon the state."

Governor Palin's announcement came in the form of a rambling and incoherent speech

Palin had some 18 months left in office.  She had lost some battles in the governor's office in Alaska and faced more battles.  She refused stimulus money for her state that would have helped residents with energy bills and it was widely assumed she would be over-ridden by the state legislature.

Nobody has a definitive reason why Palin has decided to quit as governor.  Many people believe she quit in order to focus on a run for the GOP nomination for president but some of her fiercest defenders contend that the governor quit because the media has been too hard on her.  Ironically, Governor Palin criticized Hillary Clinton for being too sensitive to media criticism as you will see in this video:

  • Jenny 2 years ago

I assume you have read the text version of the speech. Have you ever seen anything so juvenile? And this woman has a book deal?

What's up with the peppering of exclamation points throughout the document, the unexplainable capitalization OF certain words, and that weird ((thing))?

Palin sure is in a class all her own.

  • Mr. Orange 2 years ago

Jenny you couldn't hold Sarah's lipstick. Damn nice athletic body especially for someone 45!!!

Not sure if this type of citizen journalism has an editor but it is not correct to use "GOP critical of ..." in the title. GOP stands for the Republican Party and is not a synonym for Republicans or conservatives. GOP does not have an opinion of this move by Sarah Palin. Individuals who are members of the Party can have such opinions. You can say "Some/Many members of GOP..." if you know the people quoted are all indeed members of the GOP not just conservatives in their thinking or views. Otherwise, you can say "Some/Many republicans" or "Some/Many conservatives" as you see fit.

Sorry for the editorializing but trying to make sure journalistic principles are not sacrificed in this new media.

mrOrange: Why don't you go to alaska and offer to kiss her feet since you are so enamored of her? Michelle Obama is worth 1000 Sarah Palins because she has brains. That all you care about is how they look just shows how shallow you are. I guess you vote for whoever you think has the best body. I'm guessing you like Boehner because he has a tan. What about Mitch McConnell who looks like a shape shifter? He shouldn't be allowed to serve the public because he's ugly by your logic. You're a buffoon.

Another journalism issue. If you quote from some source, you should provide the attribution to that source so people can see the full quote in context and to acknowledge the source. It will also help people verify the accuracy of the quote. This is part of journalistic ethics. For example, did Karl Rove tell you this quote or was the quote picked up by you from another media outlet? What about the other quotes that is not linked or source attributed?

Maryann, You going to bark all day, or you going to spit something out meaningful to the discussion. I guess you never read Michelle's thesis paper from Princeton, read like a 9th grader wrote it.

  • Mr. White 2 years ago

Let's keep this professional Mr. Blonde, you know that comparing Michelle with Sarah isn't fair. It's like entering a Volkswagon in the Indy 500.

  • Mr. Pink 2 years ago

I think comparing Michelle to Sarah is like comparing a Jackass to Secretariat, pun intended.

Palin brings out the cockroach writers every time she speaks.
Others have written about this "Examiner" and her lies and deceptions in her writing.

Karen Harper or Jenny couldn't match ANY of Palin's womanhood or accomplishments in any way shape or form.
Jealousy is a bad trait women.

  • Mr. White 2 years ago

Tell it Shiela! The truth is something these liberal/progressives shun so much, you wonder how many of them actually believe the vile they spew.

  • Mr. Blonde 2 years ago

Check for typos Mr.White, you probably meant bile instead of vile, let's try to be more professional.

  • Shiela 2 years ago

    What a great picture!

All you jealous women WISH you looked that good at 44!

  • Dirty Harry 2 years ago

Sarah is quite photogenic, she just doesn't seem to take bad pictures, the camera is definitely her friend. Helluva body for her age, nice, trim, and healthy. You can tell she definitely takes care of herself.

Beyond her appearance, is there any reason (name one) to vote for Governor Palin for anything?

  • Joe Biden 2 years ago

I got a 4-letter word to describe Sarah Palin, H-O-T!

  • Shiela 2 years ago

"is there any reason (name one) to vote for Governor Palin for anything?"

"Oil companies in Alaska are paying more money in taxes than ever before. The state's oil and gas tax revenues for its just-ended fiscal 2007 topped $10 billion. That's twice as much as fiscal 2006 and four times more than 2004."
"As a new governor in 2007, Mrs. Palin stepped in to address the fiscal crisis and restore accountability. Working with Democrats and Republicans alike, she chose a 25% profits tax. But in lean years the state reverts to a 10% gross revenue tax on legacy fields that do not require massive continuing inputs of new capital."

  • The Naitch 2 years ago

You gotsta admit brother, it sho do beat lookin' at Sonya Sotomayor!

    Peace

  • HarryOsibin 2 years ago

Governor Palin increased oil tax revenue...to a "fair" level. Oil companies are heavily subsidized and GOP pols in particular are loathe to tax their huge profits appropriately. What is your source for this information? As president would she advocate oil companies pay their fair share? Would she let them drill anywhere they want? "Drill, baby, drill."

  • Larry 2 years ago

Can someone give me one reason why they voted for Obama, based on what he accomplished before being president. Name me one thing that Obama did as a senator that warranted him receiving your vote.

"April 9th, 2008JUNEAU -- Oil giants BP and Conoco Phillips announced Tuesday they're joining forces on an Alaska natural gas pipeline, news that fired both excitement and doubt in the state capital. Gov. Sarah Palin and many lawmakers hailed the announcement as healthy progress toward the state's grandest economic development dream. But some raised questions: Are the companies sincere? Should the state now award an exclusive license plus a $500 million subsidy to a Canadian company touting a pipeline of its own?

BP and Conoco executives in Anchorage said Tuesday their companies will form a new firm to pursue what they call the Denali project -- a pipeline costing more than $30 billion from the rich North Slope gas fields down the Alaska Highway and into Canada.

The project sounds very similar to one Conoco proposed by itself in November, but the executives said this is a fresh approach."

    NO STATE OR FEDERAL FUNDS!

  • Max 2 years ago

Sheila we can all tell you're a man. You have the hots for Palin. Alaska gets more pork money from the federal government than any other state.
    www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2008-03-22-earmarks_N.htm
Alaska citizens pay one of the highest heating bills in the country and Sarah Palin turned down federal money that would have gone to those people. The Alaska legislature will of course override her just as they have over-ridden every other stupid thing she's tried to get through lately.
So Sarah palin has a nice body and that makes her a great governor? She quit in case you haven't noticed. She can't take the heat. She's a quitter and a loser and anybody who likes her is a drooler.

  • Mic C 2 years ago

Poor poor, Palin. Lucky lucky, Alaska

  • Yeah Right 2 years ago

I don't know what all you LIEberals are being so smug about while you're waiting on your gubmint checks? Even if Sarah leaves politics she'll make 5-6 figures a speech for speaking at assorted functions. If not she can run as an independent or republican for 2012.
