The Republican Senate primary in Delaware just gets curiouser and curiouser.
Christine O'Donnell - the outsider candidate given Sarah Palin and Jim DeMint's conservative stamp of approval - outpolls her choice-of-the-establishment opponent Rep. Make Castle according to the latest numbers.
Granted, Castle remains in striking distance since O'Donnell's lead is well within the margin of error. However, O'Donnell's sudden surge proves again Palin's sway over a Republican rank-and-file with deep emotional ties to her.
The possibly of nominating O'Donnell has energized the GOP's base of tea partiers and vast conspirators. They smell an upset and intend to do with Mike Castle what they did in Alaska nominating Joe Miller over incumbent Senator and longtime Palin foe Lisa Murkowski.
Their problem with that right wing wet dream scenario is twofold.
One, O'Donnell is unelectable in deep blue Delaware, while mushy moderate Mike Castle is eminently electable in this Republican wave year. Castle currently leads Democratic challenger Chris Coons by double digits. O'Donnell, meanwhile, trails by the same amount.
She would almost certainly lose, and she would lose because while Delaware crossover Dems and independents could stomach a vote for Castle, they will not for a Tea Party favorite with the mark of the Palin-beast like O'Donnell.
Two, O'Donnell has been caught in a bold faced campaign lie, exposed as having repeatedly lied about her Princeton graduate school credentials, which it turns out are nonexistent. Adding insult to injury, when a conservative group for which she worked learned about her falsified record, they fired her.
In retaliation, O'Donnell tried to get rich quick by filing a frivolous ‘mental anguish' lawsuit against the group citing sexism, the kind of game normally found bugaboo with Republicans.
It leaves the party infighting over their ignoble choice.
Do they vote for the career politician who they doubt shares their die hard conservative principles, but whose electability holds the key to a Republican Senate majority with committee control and thus total center-right Congressional power, grinding the abhorred President's ‘socialist' agenda to a halt?
Or do they vote for the lying Tea Party train wreck, who will hand the seat to the Democrats?
The choice is inexorable, and the parallels with the Nevada Senate contest are many. Nevada Republicans should have nominated a safe Republican and instead got caught up in Tea Party fervor and nominated Sharron Angle, the one Republican who may allow Harry Reid to keep his seat.
The thought that brainless purism may gift the hated Reid a victory where he was destined to lose has national GOPers apoplectic (although, Nevada conservatives less excuse since Angle's Republican opponents, like businessman Danny Tarkanian, were more ideologically palatable than Castle).
We will find out on Wednesday whether control of process means more to Republican primary voters in Delaware than losing with your boots on.

Very nice piece. Ideological purity seems to be the spark in the engine and beside the powder keg this year.
I would rather see a democrat elected than elect someone who doesn't share my veiws and or compromises their ideology fir electability.
I feel like your post is more of your opinion than reporting, If you feel Christine O'Donnell is a liar, please state your case and back it up. What are your sources? If it turns out that she is, then that is her own ball of wax, but what is the point of reporting this news when it seems that you are her judge and jury? When and where did she lie? Did you even do your homework to get her statement to she what her official statement is about the alleged lies? Is O'Donnell electable? Perhaps or perhaps she is not, but Her candidacy isn't any more rediculous than any other local politician. She has done her work to get where she is the best way that she knows how, just like all other local politicians. Cut her a break, and for God's sake, let the vote fall where it may.
You think you are cool on the front page of a online news organization, but your accusations are mean, and probably untrue. State your report, but back it up with documentation. Be a professional. How would you like it if someone reported nasty lies about you?
This has been reported on time and yet again. In fact, it was conservative who uncovered the lie. You are the one who needs to look up sources, because you are the one in the dark.
Did O'Donnell say she took master's courses at Princeton. Yes, she did. Was that true? No, it wasn't, it was a lie, one for which she was fired.
You can bury your head in the sand and try to ignore it, but don't for one minute think you're going to confuse those of us who live in the real world.
