ROSEVILLE -- Effective Mar. 1 Google will implement a new privacy policy, which is aimed to make it easier for Google users to maintain control over the data associated with their Google accounts.
According to official documentation released by Google, the privacy settings will be consolidated into one unified set of “sharing and data management” options for all the Google products and services you use (Gmail, Google+, YouTube, Blogger, Web History, Alerts, Calendar, Docs, etc.).
Joshua Jones is a technology expert at Professional Computer Services in Roseville. “In addition to management of your privacy and data control settings, the need for a strong password is greater,” Jones said, “If your password is hacked, they will have access to all your account services and data.”
The service aim of Google is to integrate all of your data (preferences, web searches, etc.) so that the set of applications tied to your account can better serve you. For example, the map search will automatically call up directions for the location of the meeting on your calendar that day. It is also, nevertheless, a way to help companies achieve targeted marketing around your on-line activity. (Note: go to ads preferences manager to opt out of targeted ads.)
Jones also cautions folks about having “all your eggs in one basket” can be crippling if something goes wrong. “Know the ‘terms of use’,” he said, “it is possible to loose everything if you violate terms of use and the company decides to delete your account.”
To maintain your privacy settings, go to Google Dashboard, which will allow you to modify the settings for how the data affiliated with the product or service you are using is handled. For example, you can choose to “never save chat history” associated with your Gmail account.
