Google’s Ice Cream is the best of both worlds

Hey Androidians it’s me again.  I haven’t written a lot as of late because I have been increasingly contacted by individuals for advice.  March was definitely the month of advice.  But you’ll see several posts in the next coming weeks and days.  Continue to ask the questions, make suggestions and ask for advice it’s what I love.

So I’ve told you about Gingerbread and Honeycomb.  I even gave you a glance of what Ice Cream is about.  But the details have really started to pour in.  If you don’t know and are new to Android, Android’s software releases are named after desserts.  For instance we have Froyo (Android 2.2), Gingerbread (Android 2.3), and Honeycomb (Android 3.0 – Tablet specific software).   Well Ice Cream has a synergistic approach.  It will combine Gingerbread, Honeycomb and Google TV functionality all for your phone.  Official details should be available during Google I/O (developers’ conference).

What this means to you

  • Google TV comes to your Android phone.  What is Google TV?  Read this.
  • New docking stations will start to emerge like the ones you have seen for Motorola Atrix
  • Google TV joins Android Open Source Project thereby unifying Android, Google TV and possibly Chrome OS.
  • Faster updates
  • Less fragmentation
  • Updates will update all three pieces of software
  • One piece of software for everything
  • Brings action bar to smartphones instead of “press and hold” function
  • Brings the new multi-tasking functionality to smartphones
  • Brings the totally holographic screen interface to smartphones without the “home”, “back”, “menu” or “search” button.
  • Ice Cream will support dual-core applications
  • Probably be named Android 3.1

Something to note is that the smartphones you buy now with Gingerbread will surely be antiquated when Ice Cream comes out which I suspect will be around August/September.  Case in point: let’s say you buy the Atrix or Thunderbolt those two phones which are the latest phones have designated areas for the “home”, “back”, “menu” or “search” button.  This feature will be useless when Ice Cream comes out, because everything is based on a hologram.

The most certain thing is the best of Gingerbread, Honeycomb and Google TV is coming to your phone.  Definitely more to come.
