Chrome is shiny across the ocean
For locals here in San Francisco, the Internet browsers of choice are Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or Safari. In the U.K., Google’s Chrome has snagged the number two spot and is gaining momentum.
Chrome is faster
The top browser in the U.K. is Microsoft’s Internet Explorer with a market share of 45% while Chrome slid into second place, just past Firefox, with 22% of users.
One reason Chrome has jumped in rank is due to a national advertising campaign launched by Google. But the primary reason why it has gained so much popularity is its speed.
According to tests conducted on Internet browsers by PCmag, Chrome was consistently faster than its rivals. But Lars Bak, a Google engineer, isn’t satisfied:
"You should never be happy with [existing] speed. Of course it gets harder to make substantial gains, but it's all healthy competition.”
Simple is better
While the idea of “bigger is better” is common, in the case of Google’s Chrome, the thinking was just the opposite of what other browsers were doing.
For Chrome, the simpler route was the way to go. Bak explains:
"Speed is a fundamental part of it, but it's also about the minimal design and the way it handles security.
“If you as a user try [to load] a webpage and it feels snappy, it's really hard to go back [to another browser]. It has shown that people spend more time interacting with the web."
