The big announcement came from Google and sent a buzz around the Austin annual South By Southwest technology, media and film convention, that Google will release an Android-based software development kit for wearable devices within two weeks, reports the San Jose Mercury News.
Jeffrey Hammond, an analyst in Forrester's application development and delivery group believes that this Google arrival in two weeks will be the big push needed for wearable tech to become mainstream.
Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research stated, ‘the world could be very different six to eight months from now.’ And why not a different world to completely send us to the next level to revolutionize how we live? Google’s Android system powers the world through the smartphones. That moved lifestyle up a notch and continues to do so.
But Bob O'Donnell, founder and chief analyst with TECHnalysis Research, is wary of the Android translation because of the size of a watch at 2 inches of screen and other wearable type devices. He cites Pebble and Fitbit as having their own operating systems to match the size with the technology. However, Fitbit has been fighting issues of skin rashes that its product produces when worn. That problem has not been resolved yet.
Rumors about Google smartwatch is that it will be in production with LG and look for an announcement in June.
Sundar Pichai, senior vice president of Chrome, Android and apps at Google stated that with the wearables, ‘we are just scratching the surface.’
He sees that when the developed kit it presented in two weeks it will lay out the vision for how we see this market working. Pichai says that, ‘when we think of wearables, we think of it as a platform. We see a world of sensors. Sensors can be small and powerful and gather a lot of information that can be useful for users. We want to build the right APIs for this world of sensors.’
