In observance of April Fool’s Day, Google promoted the latest in cutting edge search technology by unveiling its remarkable Google Nose.
Described as a new scentsation in search, the full page nose landing page with the headline “Smelling is believing” touted the powerful new application with catchy new descriptions that are presented in a manner which it appeals to mass consumer appeal -
Coming to your senses: go beyond type, talk, and touch for a new notation of sensation.
Your internet sommelier: expertly curated Knowledge Graphs pair images, descriptions, and aromas.
Take a whiff: the Google Aromabase - 15M+ scentibytes.
Don't ask, don't smell: For when you're wary of your query - SafeSearch included.
Google Nose also displays search results of a Wet Dog, describing the furry friend as “aggressive and foxy, with notes of musk, wet towel.” Nose also showed some of the most popular scent results that other people have sniffed including lemon, horse manure and locker room.
The public is invited to try the beta version of Google Nose by clicking on sites blue button, but is directed to Google’s normal search engine, with random results including “campsite”, “Google News” and “Garlic breath”.
The reception from this “new” search capability has been much more positive than Google’s other April Fool’s joke, announcing the permanent shutdown of You Tube because it was just an enormous contest, with the winner to be announced in the year 2023. Much of the criticism of the You Tube prank was geared towards the cost to produce the video, versus the real removal of Google Reader.
To visit Google Nose, please use this link, although it will likely be taken down by April 2. After all, it is April Fool's Day!
