Google Maps for iOS has received its first update. Released back in December, Google released update version 1.1 on Tuesday which brought some minor but much needed features.
Now Google Maps has a newly redesigned Nearby Places interface which makes it much easier to locate Restaurants, Gas Stations, Coffee Shops, Bars, and more. If you're in an unfamiliar location and quickly need to find a restaurant simply tap the search bar. Then tap the Fork and Knife icon to show all the restaurants in your general location. This feature is easy to use and very helpful when trying to find what you're looking for in a location.
Google Maps has also added the ability to search for Google Contacts within the app. That means you can now search for friends and colleagues stored on your Google account even if they are not synced to your iPhone. Just search for a friend's name and their contact will show up with a different icon and their address, tap their name and you will see directions from your current location to their address.
Google Maps was greatly missed by many when iOS 6 was released last year. When Google released the stand alone app in December it was welcomed with open arms as one of the best choices for replacing the Apple Stock Map app. Google Maps is a free download available in the App Store.
