Although Google has dominated the search engine and advertising components of the internet for years, this month its latest social networking project Google+ is making larger headlines. As shown in the above graph created by Leon Haland of Altibox. Google+ has amassed over 10 million users in its first 16 days of beta. And it is reported today by The Wall Street Journal that the network has 20 million users. This says a lot for a product that has not officially launched.
But where are all the San Diegans? If you would like to like an invite to Google+ to join me, please say so in the comments please leave your gmail address.
Users of plus.google.com, Plusers are sharing more than a billion content items a day and the “+1” is being used about 2.3 million or more times a day as reported by Mark Hachman over at PCMag.com. This is what happens when you gather a large group of tech savvy people and give them unlimited text, photo-sharing and video.
It does not seem as though this growth is completely explainable as just a new gadget interest. Users so far have all gotten in by way of either a personal invitation by Google or by invite from a Google+ early adopter. Google.com has yet to use its influence to gain new users. For example, Google has over 193 million Gmail users monthly, it will be interesting to see how many of those will adopt Google+ once they are marketed. It is safe to predict that most Gmail users will find Google+ to be a great addition to their current Gmail services.
Should Facebook and Twitter be concerned? Well, Facebook is lacking in allowing open networking and does not really allow for the segregation of posts which Google+ does beautifully through Circles. Not to mention also that in an effort to compete with Google+ Hangouts, Facebook has broken its chat system. Most Plusers are also finding that they have no character limit to posts made and image and video embedding is as simple as copy/paste all of which makes Twitter seem archaic.
So there is no surprise that Google+ has made history as the fastest growing social media platform. It is clear to see that Larry Page and his Google+ Teams are working hard to bring terrific "plus" to Google.
