Update:  Their was a mixed reaction to the luge Google doodle.  Many people did not feel it was appropriate and Google changed the doodle during the day on Saturday to feature a snowboarder.

Tragedy struck the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics before the opening ceremonies even began on Friday with the death of luger Nodar Kumaritashvili of Georgia during a practice run accident. Today’s Google doodle featuring the luge is a fitting tribute to Kumaritashvili and all of the Olympic athletes.

The Google doodle shows a luger going down the track sliding over the “O”. It is the second Google logo that is celebrating the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Friday’s Google doodle displayed an opening ceremony scene.

Google may not have created the Google doodle featuring the luge in honor of Kumaritashvili, but it is a fitting tribute. The first two rounds of the men’s singles for the luge are today at the Whistler Sliding Centre. That was the event Kumaritashvili was practicing when his fatal crash occurred.

Round one of the men’s single luge of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics is scheduled for 8 pm and round two for 10:10 pm Saturday. Sunday will have round three at 4 pm and the gold medal round starting at 6 pm.

TV Coverage of the Vancouver 2010 luge events can be seen locally on WCNC-TV 36 Charlotte. No TV coverage of the luge event that is featured on today’s Google doodle is scheduled for today. With the death of Kumaritashvili, there will probably be some coverage of the lugers sliding down the track today.

The scheduled TV coverage for the luge on WCNC-TV 36 Charlotte is Sunday morning from 12-1 am and then picking back up again at 1 pm later that day. The gold medal round of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic luge men’s singles is scheduled to be covered starting at 7 pm Sunday night and go into early Monday morning.

The Google doodle today shows the fastest sledding sport, the luge. At the same time it honors a fallen athlete that was living his dream of being at his first Winter Olympics in Vancouver 2010.

are you serious?! i think it's a bit tasteless. i'm sure that "i'm feeling lucky" button along with that banner is really fitting as well

JC, I do feel it is a nice tribute. His death is tragic. What I feel is tasteless is the constantly showing of the video by news channels.

I don't know , maybe it was done with the idea of tribute but i find it tactless...

I think it's a great tribute and not tactless...he was an athlete and should be remembered in a good way, not thru video.

@ jc - are YOU serious?! I think it's tasteless and insensitive to say that this great tribute to the athlets was 'tasteless'. What you are repeading after bunch of people re this button - is not a deep thought. Nothing in life can flawless and agree with everything. Too bad Google took the logo down, trying to be 'politically correct'. I agree with Denise though - constant re-run of Nodar's death is disheartening.

    insensitive, i think.

if not, then why did they change this 'fitting tribute'?

I find nothing tactless about it! It is a great tribute.
