Gadgets NDTV reported on Mar. 4, 2013, that Monday's Google doodle featured Miriam Makeba celebrating her 81st birthday.
She was born on Mar. 4, 1932, in Johannesburg, South Africa and was named Zenzile Miriam Makeba.
She was a well-known singer and actress. Her song ‘Pata Pata’ released in the year 1956 got great appreciation.
According to reports, the early years of Makeba were not so good. She spent the initial six months of her life in jail as her mother got imprisoned for selling illegal beer.
At this time Makeba was just eighteen years old. When Makeba reached at the age of six years, her father died.
The Grammy Award winner for Best Folk Recording, Makeba began singing when she was very young.
She sung in the choir of her primary school. Manhattan Brothers, a South African jazz group gave her a professional break in 1950s. Later she left the Manhattan Brothers and went on to record with her all-woman group, The Skylarks.
She also acted as a social activist as in the year 1963, she raised her voice against apartheid in South Africa before the United Nations.
Miriam Makeba died in November 2008 at the age of 76 due to a heart-attack leaving behind a bequest of policy for civil rights around the world.
