Every few days, Google continues to change its logo to commemorate significant events in history. Last week, it was Gandhi’s birthday and his photo appeared alongside the login, the week before it was Google’s 11th birthday, and google was spelled googlle. Photo: google barcode.
Today, no matter where you are in the world, you will see a barcode next to the google login. The barcode celebrates the 57th anniversary of the first patent of the barcode by inventors Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver. The original patent applied to a system that encoded data in circles and could be scanned from any direction. Over the years, the barcode system evolved into the rectangular barcode with strips of black and white line which is what we see today.
