You may be surprised by the “Google” Image this morning on the search engine, a series of women dressed in beautiful dresses with a petite woman in glasses in the forefront. Google is celebrating what would have been Edith Head' 116th birthday. Head , one of Hollywood's most legendary costume designer, was awarded 8 Academy Awards, the most ever won by a woman She designed costumes for Audrey Hepburn ,Grace Kelly, Lucille Ball, Elizabeth Taylor, Natalie Wood, and Sophia Loren , to name a few.
Head began her career a a French teacher before being hired by Paramount Picture as a sketch artist in the costume department. Head admitted later to borrowing another students sketches for the job interview as she had no art, design or costume design experience. To improve her rudimentary drawing skills, she took evening art classes at the Chouinard Art College. She worked at Paramount for 43 years until she went to Universal Studios to join Alfred Hitchcock in 1967,
Head also designed the uniform for the United States Coast Guard in the 1970's,which she called the highlight of her career. She also received the Meritorious Public Service Award for this venture.
